A Study of Cognitive Biases in Personal Financial Decisions Based on Interviews with Financial Practitioners

Yangminxing Wu

Drawing on six informational interviews with entrepreneurs, financial educators, wealth advisors, and community service providers and synthesizing insights from literature on behavioral finance and financial education, this paper explores cognitive biases in personal financial decision-making. The paper begins by analyzing how current preferences, optimistic expectations, mental accounting, and overconfidence influence decisions regarding consumption, saving, and investment. It further points out that practical factors, including income, experience, language, and trust, also shape these choices, cautioning against attributing financial difficulties solely to cognitive biases. Building on the synthesized insights and the author's experience in leading the FinTalk Youth Financial Literacy Promotion Program (FTFPP), this paper proposes a pedagogical approach centered on concrete decision-making. Its two core elements are: (1) guiding students to make choices based on the goals, available funds, and time constraints of the individuals involved, while articulating the underlying rationale and assumptions; and (2) using supplementary information and feedback to enable students to re-examine their initial judgments, compare alternative options, and justify their decisions—whether they choose to adjust or maintain their original course of action. The paper also proposes a small-scale pilot and evaluation plan, serving as a starting point for subsequently testing this design. The paper emphasizes that youth financial education for youth should go beyond the mere explanation of concepts by incorporating opportunities for analyzing scenarios, articulating rationales, and reflecting on decision-making, thereby enabling students to better apply the concepts they have learned to real-life choices. **Keywords:** Cognitive biases; personal financial decisions; informational interview; youth financial education
